Play Onwards (POW)
Vocabulary Workbook: Fill-in-the-Blanks
For Rank Beginning Readers, Including Foreign Speakers
What Play Onwards (POW) Is
Play Onwards (POW) is a fill‑in‑the‑blanks vocabulary workbook for Rank Beginning Readers, Including Foreign Speakers. Across its two volumes, POW offers tens of thousands of short sentences, giving new readers a vast supply of gentle, structured practice.
-
Each exercise begins with a short sentence read aloud by a teacher (or a TTS voice). One whole word is missing. The student hears the word, hazards a guess, then writes the whole thing with a little spark of pride. This steady rhythm of hearing, trying, and writing helps beginners connect spoken sounds to written letters in a natural, confidence‑building way.
-
Hearing these sentences supports many kinds of learners. Rank beginners hear clear, simple words they can succeed with. Foreign speakers hear natural English rhythm and pronunciation. More mature students strengthen listening accuracy and spelling awareness. The same sentence can offer something slightly different to each learner — and that flexibility is part of POW’s quiet strength.
-
Some sentences call for a plural ending or a verb form. These small variations help beginners notice how English words change in different situations.
-
POW can be used in several ways. A teacher may read the sentences aloud, or a TTS voice may do the reading. Individual pages can also be printed out so the student can work independently and then review the results later with a teacher. Each approach gives beginners a clear, steady way to hear a word, think it through, and suddenly realize, “I can write that.”
-
Even the youngest beginners can make astonishing gains with POW. The sentences are short, friendly, and wonderfully approachable. Many children surprise their teachers — and themselves — with how quickly they begin to hear sounds, write whole words, and understand far more than anyone expected.

What's more, as children's vocabulary enlarges, their brain synapses expand commensurately. Thus, their mental acuity will actually increase significantly.
